Senior Chinese Communist Party leader Zeng Qinghong, on behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Council and the Central Military Commission (CMC), sent Lunar New Year greetings to retired cadres across the country Wednesday.

Zeng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, offered season's greetings at a reception jointly held by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, the General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC.

Zeng hailed the historical achievements and lofty contributions made by Party veterans from a range of backgrounds, stressing that their good traditions and lofty ideals would carry on forever.

The CPC had always been showing loving care and attention to former cadres both in their political progress and in their lives, Zeng said. Effective social security and medical insurance schemes and financial support needed to be established or improved to provide better services for them.

Zeng also said that the year 2003 was the first year for fully implementing the guidelines of the 16th Party Congress held in mid November last year. This was significant as a sound beginning would lay a solid foundation for achieving the specific goals set by the Party Congress.
