The Chinese organizing committee for the 2003 Woman's World Cup by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was formally established in Beijing, January 21, which opened its first working conference on the same day. Li Furong, deputy director of the State General Administration of Sports, acts as director of the committee. Deputy directors are from local governments of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu, where the games are to be held. Yan Shiduo, executive vice president of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), acts as both deputy director and secretary-general of the committee.
China once hosted in Guangdong the first woman's world cup in 1991, and this year's is the fourth one. The opening match, participated by two teams of the group A, is scheduled to be held in Shanghai Stadium on September 23. Then, 16 teams will respectively go through a single round robin in four groups in the four cities mentioned. Then the first two winners of each group will enter 1/4 finals and semi-finals beginning from October 4. The final fighting for the third and first places will take place on October 11.
Last year the South Korea and Japan successfully hosted the men's world cup, said the committee, and one year later, the women's world cup will be held in China, which will also kick off a "century celebration" since the year 2004 marks the 100th anniversary of the foundation of FIFA. At that time China will once again leap into world attention and show the world that China is capable of completing things done well by the Koreans and Japanese, and even better.
