US Sends Two More Aircraft Carriers to Gulf
US Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has ordered two more aircraft carrier battle groups to be deployed in the Gulf region, joining two groups already positioned within striking distance of Iraq, defense officials said on Tuesday.
US Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has ordered two more aircraft carrier battle groups to be deployed in the Gulf region, joining two groups already positioned within striking distance of Iraq, defense officials said on Tuesday.
The two groups which had just received the deployment order were the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is undergoing repairs at Perth,Australia, and a carrier from the Norfolk, Virginia-based AtlanticFleet.
A spokesman from the Atlantic Fleet said the fleet commander, Adm. Robert Natter, decided Tuesday that the Norfolk carrier will be the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is conducting training off the East Coast of the United States.
The USS Harry S Truman and the USS Constellation are already positioned in the Mediterranean and in the northern Gulf area.
Each aircraft carrier, with about 70 aircraft aboard, is accompanied by a battle group of destroyers, cruisers and other ships, plus a submarine.
The deployment order was part of a continuing US military buildup in the Gulf region.
Officials said Rumsfeld was considering sending one or two additional carriers to the Gulf region, for a potential total of six.
