Ministry of National Defense Holds New Year Reception

China's Ministry of National Defense held a Chinese New Year reception in Beijing Tuesday for foreign defense attaches, assistant defense attaches and their spouses.

China's Ministry of National Defense held a Chinese New Year reception in Beijing Tuesday for foreign defense attaches, assistant defense attaches and their spouses.

Zhan Maohai, director of the ministry's Foreign Affairs Office, who addressed the reception on behalf of China's Defense Minister Chi Haotian, said 2002 was a year of great significance in Chinese history.

In the past year, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) had made remarkable achievements in army building and military reform across the board, greatly improving its overall combat effectiveness, he said.

The PLA's friendly and cooperative ties with its counterparts in the rest of the world had been further strengthened in 2002, hesaid.

In the new year, the PLA would further its comprehensive military-to-military exchanges with foreign counterparts, and consolidate and boost friendly and cooperative ties with armed forces worldwide, to work together with them for world peace and stability, he said.

Chi Haotian, vice-chairman of the PRC Central Military Commission and state councilor, Liang Guanglie, chief of the PLA General Staff and member of the Chinese Central Military Commission (CCMC), Liao Xilong, CCMC member and director-general of the PLA General Logistic Department, and Li Jinai, member of the CCMC and director-general of the General Armaments Department, together with 193 defense attaches, assistant attaches and their spouses from 62 countries were present at the reception.
