Vice-premier Urges Better Readiness for Filling Three Gorges Reservoir
China's Vice-premier Wu Bangguo urged local governments to speed up preparations for filling the Three Gorges reservoir by boosting the relocation of residents, reservoir cleaning and natural disaster prevention.
China's Vice-premier Wu Bangguo urged local governments to speed up preparations for filling the Three Gorges reservoir by boosting the relocation of residents, reservoir cleaning and natural disaster prevention.
Wu made the comments while visiting the reservoir area in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.
He said although the relocations for building the second phase of Three Gorges project were almost completed, local governments should speed up cleaning the reservoir area by removing toxic waste and clearing out demolished buildings.
Upgrading the environment and preserving culture relics were another two key issues in preparations for filling the reservoir, Wu added.
From Jan. 19-21, Wu visited the Yunyang county and Wanzhou regions in Chongqing, both heavily burdened with moving residents to new homes. He said local governments should offer more support to those transferred people to help them lead more comfortable lives after moving home.
Local governments should try their best to help local laid-off workers get jobs and increase their incomes, he said.
The reservoir at the Three Gorges dam project is expected to be filled in June. At that date, the project will start to play part of its role in flood control, power generation and navigation.
