Changan Ford, the joint venture company between Changan and Ford, will produce at least one new car model every year in China from 2003, said David W. Thursfield, executive vice-president of Ford Motor Company here.
Changan Ford promoted its first new model Fiesta on Jan. 18 in Chongqing. The Fiesta's relatively low price, engine power and lowoil consumption gained much attention from experts and consumers.
Changan Ford will produce its second new model Mondeo in the second half of 2003. The production line is being built.
Thursfield said the long-term strategy for a foreign company inChina was to have totally "made-in-China" products by purchasing, producing and selling here. Changan had many advantages in the domestic market, which enabled the successful cooperation with Ford.
He said Ford was not the earliest arrival to China's auto market, but by promoting more new models, increasing service quality and modifying prices, Ford would win more Chinese consumers.
Thursfield, impressed by China's rapid growing auto industry onhis first visit here, said the economic growth, road construction and industrial regrouping would provide more opportunities for China to become one of the biggest auto producers in the world. Hepredicted China would produce five million cars by 2010.
Founded in April, 2001, Changan Ford was set up with an investment 49 million US dollars respectively from each side.
