Chinese Information Industry Sets Year's Objectives

The added value of China's information industry will hit 632 billion yuan (about 76.42 billion US dollars) this year and the business volume of the telecommunications sector will reach 506.7 billion yuan (about 61.27 billion US dollars).

The added value of China's information industry will hit 632 billion yuan (about 76.42 billion US dollars) this year and the business volume of the telecommunications sector will reach 506.7 billion yuan (about 61.27 billion US dollars).

China will also cultivate another 33 million fixed-phone subscribers and 52 million mobile phone users this year, and the sales volume of the electronic information product manufacturing sector will reach 1.64 trillion yuan (about 198.31 billion US dollars).

These objectives, set by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) for this year, were disclosed Monday by Wu Jichuan, minister of Information Industry, when addressing a national conference on the information industry, which opened here Monday.

Wu said this year's investment in fixed assets of the telecommunications sector will hit 210 billion yuan (about 25.39 billion US dollars), while last year the figure was 210.6 billion yuan (25.47 billion US dollars).

Regarding the electronic and information product manufacturing sector, the minister said the industrial added value will hit 328 billion yuan (about 39.66 billion US dollars) and its exports 100 billion US dollars, adding that the business volume of the software and IC (integrated circuit) industry will reach 120 billion yuan (about 14.51 billion US dollars).

To reach these objectives, China will have to produce 13 million computers, 120 million mobile phone handsets, 50 color computer monitors and 10 billion IC chips this year. It also has to export 50 million mobile phone handsets and 40 million color computer monitors.

Statistics issued by the MII show that in 2002, the business volume of the telecommunications sector reached 456.7 billion yuan(about 55.22 billion US dollars) and the number of phone users stood at 420 million, an increase of 95.45 million over the previous year. The sales volume of the electronic information product manufacturing sector hit 1.4 trillion yuan (about 169.29 billion US dollars) with exports reaching 92.5 billion US dollars).

According to the MII's objectives, China's production of color TVs this year will be equal to that of last year, which was 50 million sets. However, this year China has to export 20 million color TV sets while last year it exported 18 million.

In recent years, China's information industry has grown rapidly.China has the world's largest number of phone users and the world's second largest number of Internet surfers. China is also the third largest manufacturer of electronic information products in the world.
