More Immigrants to Move out of Three Gorges Area
About 25,000 rural residents will move out of the Three Gorges reservoir area this year to resettle in other Chinese regions, according to a recent conference in Chongqing municipality, southwest China.
About 25,000 rural residents will move out of the Three Gorges reservoir area this year to resettle in other Chinese regions, according to a recent conference in Chongqing municipality, southwest China.
This biggest tide of emigrants since 2000 will mainly settle in Shanghai City and 10 provinces including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujianand Guangdong, which have received over 72,000 newcomers in the past three years.
Located in Hubei Province, the Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest hydropower project. It is scheduled for completion in 2009.It is designed to contribute to flood prevention, power generation, transportation and water supply.
According to the construction plan, about 1.13 million people in Hubei Province and Chongqing Municipality will leave their homes in the dam area.
China will inject huge investment into relocating these residents, of which so far, 140,000 have moved out, over half of whom have already resettled under government arrangements.
