Most Americans Prefer Peaceful Solution in Iraq: Poll
Most Americans hope the Bush administration will take more time to seek a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue rather than moving quickly into a war, according to a new poll released by the Newsweek magazine on Saturday.
Most Americans hope the Bush administration will take more time to seek a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue rather than moving quickly into a war, according to a new poll released by the Newsweek magazine on Saturday.
About 60 percent of those surveyed say they would prefer the Bush administration to allow more time to find an alternative to war.
The poll showed that support for a military option would be 81 percent, if the United States were to act with full allied support and the backing of the United Nations Security Council.
But a majority would oppose the war should the United States act without the support of the United Nations and had no more than one or two allies.
More than half, 54 percent, say they expect the war would cause serious divisions with allies, and more than two-thirds say it would cause serious problems throughout the Arab countries.
The Newsweek poll of 1,002 adults was taken on Jan. 16-17, and had an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
