India testfired a medium-range surface-to-air missile on Saturday from the interim test range off its east cost, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The sophisticated multi-target missile, codenamed "Akash," was "successfully" testfired from a mobile launcher at about 1525 local time (0955 GMT) off its east state of Orissa, PTI quoted defense sources as saying.
India testfired a short-range missile, Agni-I, on Thursday last week and reportedly planned to fire the medium and long range version of Agni-III before the end of this year.
The missile, which has a range of 25 kilometers, is one of the five missiles under various stages of development by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Akash, a sleek missile weighting about 650 kilograms, has the capability of carrying a payload of 50 kilograms and uses the integrated two-staged Ramjet propulsion technology.
The missile, which has undergone several flight trials earlier, could be put on "user's trial" soon, the defense sources were quoted as saying.
DRDO was developing a radar system, called Rajendra, and the anti-aircraft missile Akash to build a reliable air defense shield,PTI said.
