Motorola Showcases Excellence of Chinese Suppliers

Technical workers from 16 Chinese plants, selected from a total of 700 Chinese suppliers to Motorola, competed in a contest of skills in north China's Tianjin city Friday.
Michael Ning, a Beijing-based press officer for Motorola, said the company staged the event to examine and showcase the growing technical capability of its Chinese suppliers.
"Motorola pursues a win-win strategy in China. With its help, many Motorola suppliers in China have attained world-class excellence," said Ning.
Motorola purchased 11.6 billion yuan (1.4 billion US dollars) worth of parts and materials in China in 2002, which has helped to push the local ratio of Motorola's production in China to 65 percent.
The firm began to invest in China in 1992, starting in Tianjin. It has to date invested a total of 3.4 billion US dollars, including three billion dollars in Tianjin, now Motorola's largest production base, accounting for half of its global mobile phone production.
Motorola executives attributed the company's success in China partly to its carefully nurtured supply network of Chinese plants.
To help these suppliers grow, Motorola provides training in technology and management. It also helps these plants to establish joint ventures with overseas companies.
