Iqbal, a suspect in the Bali bombing who was among those killed, was not likely to have been a suicide bomber, the Jakarta Post online news service reported Friday.

Zainuri Lubis, spokesman for the Bali blast investigation team, said Friday that Iqbal, who had carried a bomb to Paddy's Bar, became "involved in an argument with a female witness" which delayed his departure from the scene.

"We suspect it was an accident," he said, adding the bombs may also have gone off early, catching Iqbal off guard.

A theory previously mooted by police that Iqbal, the suspect who died in the Oct. 12 bomb attack that killed at least 187 people, might have been a suicide bomber had raised fears that regional extremists were adopting tactics that would make it tougher for security forces to stop them.

Many of those arrested in the case so far have ties to Jemaah Islamiah, a regional Muslim militant group that intelligence officials say has plotted violence throughout Southeast Asia.
