Saddam Says US will be Defeated if it Invades Iraq

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Friday said that a fully-mobilized Iraq would defeat the United States if it was to invade Iraq.

President Saddam Hussein on Friday said that a fully-mobilized Iraq would defeat the United States if it was to invade Iraq.

"We have determined and planned to defeat the aggressors. We have mobilized our abilities, including those of the army, people and leadership," Saddam said in his address marking the 12th anniversary of the outbreak of the Gulf War, which was broadcast on Iraqi TV.

"Let your rifles waiting for them and let your faith be the leader to them," the Iraqi president said in the speech addressed to "Iraqi people, the Iraqi Army and the whole Arab Nation."

"The people and rulers of Iraq have resolved to compel the Mongols of this age to commit suicide on its walls," Saddam said, referring to the Mongol armies who invaded Baghdad in 1258 ending the Arab Abbasid Caliphate.

He said America failed to conquer Iraq in the Gulf conflict and "proved itself to be incapable" of learning from its past mistakes.

Referring to the massive US-British buildup in the Persian Gulf, Saddam said "our enemy has mustered a great force against you" but added "have no fear of them."

His remarks came as the United States accuses Saddam's regime of secretly developing weapons of mass destruction and is pouring tens of thousands of troops into the Gulf region to back up its threats to disarm Baghdad by force.
