Britain Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said Wednesday that Britain's Fylingdales radar station can be used for the controversial US missile shield project.

The United States has asked for the use of Fylingdales as part of the "son of Star Wars" project.

The Fylingdales station, on the North Yorkshire Moors, has long been identified as a lynchpin in the plan and a request from the United States was lodged last month for its use.

Critics have warned that the scheme could spark a new arms race.
