Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday for talks on a "peaceful solution" to the Iraqi crisis.
"We are here to seize any chance to achieve and find a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the Iraq issue and to avoid military scenarios," Saltanov told reporters upon arrival at Baghdad's Saddam International Airport.
Asked if he was carrying an official message for Iraqi PresidentSaddam Hussein, Saltanov said "these are only consultations, (and) there is no special message."
"The important thing is to exchange views on the situation in Iraq and the region," the Russian envoy added.
Earlier Wednesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statementthat Saltanov would "present our views and consider possible moves aimed at the political and diplomatic settlement of the Iraqi problem."
The Russian delegation led by Saltanov would also discuss "bilateral relations and Russian-Iraqi economic cooperation, including in the oil sector," the statement said.
