US President George W. Bush said Tuesday that the United States will consider providing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) with food and energy aid if the Asian country gives up its alleged nuclear programs.

"I view this as an opportunity to bind together nations in the neighborhood and around the world to make it clear to the North Koreans (the people of DPRK) that we expect this issue to be resolved peacefully and we expect them to disarm ... not to develop nuclear weapons," Bush said before his formal talks with visiting Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski at the White House.

"If they choose to do so ... I will reconsider whether or not we'll start the bold initiative that I talked to Secretary (Colin)Powell about," Bush added.

Bush explained that he had authorized Secretary of State Colin Powell last fall to provide the DPRK with assistance. The initiative was aborted after Washington said Pyongyang had acknowledged to US officials last October that it was developing nuclear weapons.

US Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly also said in Seoul over the weekend that Washington was prepared to provide energy aid to Pyongyang if the latter was willing to scrap its alleged nuclear programs.
