Plummeting temperatures coupled with dense fog aggravated cold wave conditions in northern, central and eastern India on Monday, when 36 more people died from the cold weather, thus pushing the death toll over the country to 408 this winter.
Uttar Pradesh was the hardest-hit state with 248 deaths, which was followed by Bihar, with 72 died from the cold wave, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
Icy winds swept the northwest state of Rajasthan with temperature going down as low as 1.2 degrees Celsius while there was no let-up in the current cold wave in Bihar, Punjab and Haryana with the mercury hovering between two and four degrees Celsius at many places and thick fog hitting road, rail and air traffic.
Traffic on national highways moved at a snail's pace due to poor visibility as air traffic coming or from the north either delayed or canceled, PTI said.
