Twelve Killed in India-controlled Kashmir

Twelve people, including eight militants and an Indian soldier, have been killed and two others injured in India-controlled Kashmir since Sunday night, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Monday.

An official spokesman in the disputed valley said that Indian security forces gunned down a district commander of Lashker-e-Toiba, an Islamic group active in the area, together with one of his associates in an encounter in Doda district.

Indian troops shot dead three unidentified ultras during searchoperations in Rajouri district near the Line of Control in Kashmiron Monday.

Indian rifles also killed two militants in separate encounters in central Kashmir, also on Monday, he added.

He said that militants shot dead an Indian soldier and seriously injured another one in a busy bus stand in Batmaloo.

The spokesman admitted that a civilian was killed on Sunday night in firing incident in Baramullah district, which sparked offa massive protest in the area demanding an inquiry into the incident.
