The United States may help the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) ease its energy problem if the dispute over Pyongyang's nuclear program is resolved, visiting US Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly said in Seoul on Monday.

"Once we can get beyond the nuclear weapons, there may be opportunities with the United States and with private investors ofother countries to help North Korea (DPRK) in the energy area," Kelly told a press briefing.

Kelly arrived in Seoul Sunday for a three-day visit. He is scheduled to talk with South Korean officials on the DPRK's withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Yonhap news agency reported.

He met President-elect Roh Moo-hyun on Monday morning and is scheduled to meet other South Korean officials later in the day.

"I wanted to hear directly from the president-elect some of his views he was very generous explaining to me. We see this is a great opportunity to improve and build our relationship and our alliance for the next 50 years," Kelly said.

South Korea is the first leg of Kelly's five-nation Asian tour that will also take him to China, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan.
