There Is Still Chance to Avert War: Turkish PM

Visiting Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Sunday that there is still a chance to avert war between the United States and Iraq, while urging Iraq to make its best not to give a pretext to anyone.

Visiting Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Sunday that there is still a chance to avert war between the United States and Iraq, while urging Iraq to make its best not to give a pretext to anyone.

Gul told a press conference that Ankara believes regional countries will suffer from such a war so that it will make every effort to help stop hostility.

Gul said all the nations should "contribute to find a way out ofthe crisis" and Iraq in particular should implement the United Nations resolutions.

On possibility of providing the United States with military base, Gul said Turkey will study all dimensions of the scenario, but, at the same time seek peaceful settlement to the crisis.

He said that Turkey supports Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that peace in Iraq would serve interest for the entire region.

On his message to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Gul said the context of the message will be disclosed later.

Gul arrived on Sunday for a one-day brief visit to Tehran where he met Iran's President Mohammad Khatami, Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref and Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi.
