US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld signed a deployment order on Friday to deploy an additional 35,000 US troops to the Persian Gulf region for a possible war against Iraq, US military said on Saturday.
Friday's order affects about 7,000 US marines from Camp Lejeune,North Carolina, who have already been ordered aboard three navy ships which left from their home port of Norfolk, Virginia earlier.
It is the largest deployment order since the United States began a buildup of military forces last month. The order brings the number of US troops deployed to the gulf region to around 80,000.
US military officials have said the Pentagon planned to have well over 100,000 troops in the region by the end of January, and sources have indicated the total number of regular and reserve forces that might be deployed could be between some 200,000 and 250,000.
