French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin reaffirmed Friday that France remains determined to be opposed to the idea of war on Iraq.
"We remain determined to be against war. We know that war is what is left when everything else has been tried... and we will stick to that position," Raffarin said at a New Year's reception for journalists.
France has always insisted that Iraq must be given every chanceto comply with UN resolutions on disarmament, but it never rules out joining military actions against Baghdad if authorized by the United Nations, he said.
"A mad world needs a wise France," said Raffarin without mentioning any specific world conflict.
"France will not let herself be pushed. She is independent in her decisions...It is the law, the United Nations that determine us," he added.
