Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reiterated here on Friday that Germany would not take part in a possible military intervention and would make further efforts to secure a peaceful implementation of the United Nations resolution on Iraq.

"Everything must be done so that the United Nations resolution on weapons inspection in Iraq be implemented without a military intervention," said the chancellor after a meeting of the governing Social Democratic Party.

Germany sticks to its "no" policy on military intervention "even if there is another decision," he said.

He noted his government maintained this position "both before and after the election."

It was believed his firm objection to an Iraq war and German participation helped him to be re-elected last September.

This position would also be the basis how Germany would vote onthe Iraq issue at the United Nations Security Council should the issue come to a vote, said Schroeder.
