Afro-Arab Parliamentary Conference Expresses Solidarity with Iraq

The just-concluded Afro-Arab Parliamentary Conference on Friday confirmed its full solidarity with Iraq, stressing the necessity to maintain the integrity of its people and territory, the protection of its independence and national sovereignty.

A communiqu released after the conclusion of the conference here expressed its rejection of all forms of regional and international interference in its internal affairs.

It expressed its appreciation of Iraq's unconditional acceptance of the return of international inspectors, who are currently in Iraq hunting for prohibited weapons of mass destruction in the country.

Under the UN Security Council Resolution 1441, the weapons experts resumed their hunting in Iraq on Nov. 27 after a four-year suspension.

The inspectors, who had so far searched more than 200 suspected sites in Iraq, must give their first report to the UN Security Council about Iraq's weapons program by the deadline of Jan. 27.

Earlier this month, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz criticized UN inspectors searching banned weapons in Iraq for exceeding their mandate.

"They are searching for other information about Iraq's conventional military capabilities and Iraqi scientific and industrial capability in the civilian area," he said.

The communique demanded that the inspectors fulfill their task with professionalism, neutrality and transparency.

The best solution to the Iraqi issue should be a comprehensive and final one, said the communique, adding that it should solely be realized within the UN and international legitimacy through faithful implementation of the relevant security council resolutions.

It also called that the final solution should include the lifting of the blockade imposed on Iraq and the confirmation of the respect of Iraq's sovereignty and its territorial integrity.
