The nuclear issue in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) would be best resolved through direct dialog between the United States and the DPRK, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said in Beijing Thursday.

Tang made the remark during talks with his French counterpart Dominique de Villepin, who arrived in Beijing Thursday on a visit.

As the DPRK nuclear issue was different from the Iraqi issue, Tang said, a different approach to resolve the DPRK problem had therefore been accepted by the international community.

"The best way to resolve the problem is that the United States and the DPRK have direct dialog," Tang noted. "The framework agreement reached by the two sides in 1994 should be maintained and continue to be carried out."

At present, the key to preventing a further escalation of the situation or even a loss of control was to break the stalemate between the two sides, Tang said.

The Chinese foreign minister said that fortunately the two sides and other parties concerned all held the view that the issue should be resolved peacefully through dialog.

China would continue to advocate that the non-nuclearization of the Korean peninsular and its peace and stability should be maintained, he said.

Villain said France was happy to see that the International Atomic Energy Agency had passed a relevant resolution and the United States had expressed its willingness to talk with the DPRK.

The nuclear non-proliferation principle should be safeguarded, he said, adding the DPRK should fulfill its relevant obligations, and the international community should consider meeting the security concerns of the DPRK.

At present, the international community should spare no efforts to urge a dialog between the United States and the DPRK.
