Gao Siren, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Wednesday expressed his confidence that Hong Kong will make greater achievement in 2003.
Addressing a new year reception hosted by the community service department of the liaison office, Gao said the year of 2002 witnessed consecutive events and happiness for the Chinese nation.
It is also a year that Chinese people carried forward the past cause and advanced with the times, laying a sound foundation for the development in 2003, he added.
In the past year, Hong Kong carried out the principles of "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" with the vigorous support of the Central People's Government, he said.
Hong Kong managed to make some progress in the economy, particularly in external trade, service export and tourism, giving impetus to the GDP growth, Gao noted.
Although Hong Kong still has some economic difficulties, these difficulties are temporary and periodical and are caused by the external environment, he said.
Gao pointed out that Hong Kong has also many advantages, including abundant capital, advanced technology, comprehensive legal system and a sound business environment.
More important, Hong Kong has hardworking and vigorous citizens, he added.
He said he believed that Hong Kong will surely overcome the temporary hardships and make greater achievement in the new year, with the leadership of the SAR government headed by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and the concerted efforts of the Hong Kong citizens.
The reception was attended by over 2,000 representatives from all walks of life, including officials of the SAR government, representatives from various social organizations, officials of the mainland-funded enterprises in Hong Kong and some officials of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR.
