German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reiterated Wednesday that he objected an Iraq war and would make every effort to avoid it.
The goal is to disarm Iraq without military intervention, he said at a state election gathering in the northern city of Emden in the Lower Saxony state.
The chancellor said Germany's position will not be influenced by others, saying: "What we will do is decided in Berlin."
He said "friendly nations" must understand what makes German people object war in the context of their history.
Germany should not be blamed for doing too little to fulfill its commitments, he continued.
Germany has spent some two billion euros (2.1 billion US dollars) for measures to secure peace, he noted. "We want to pull together all our strength to avoid a military conflict in the Middle East," said Schroeder.
