Li Ruihuan Hails Success of Macao SAR

The success of "Macao people governing Macao" has brought the Macao residents tangible benefits, demonstrating the correctness of the "one country, two systems" principle and providing experience to solve the Taiwan issue, China's top advisor Li Ruihuan said Tuesday in Macao.

Li, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at a welcoming reception held by the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government. He arrived here Tuesday for a four-day visit.

"I heartily rejoice at the progress you have made," he told SAR government officials.

Various fields have taken on a new look since Macao returned tothe motherland three years ago, Li said, citing that Macao's economic development has achieved success; its public order has improved significantly and local residents now work and live in peace and contentment.

New problems would occur on the road of implementing the "one country, two systems" principle, but the great idea will score greater successes if Macao gives full play to its potentiality andmobilizes all forces to overcome difficulties, proceeding from actual conditions, he said.

Macao, as well as Hong Kong, will play an important and irreplaceable role in the process of pushing forward China's reform and opening-up drive, modernization efforts and revitalization of the Chinese nation, Li said.

Macao will have a bright future and contribute more to the development and prosperity of the motherland if all the people firmly safeguard the authority of the Basic Law, abide by all clauses of the law and work hard with one heart and one mind, he said.

Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the Macao SAR expressed his warmest welcome to the delegation led by Li Ruihuan. Ma Man Kei, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, was present atthe reception.

During the visit, Li Ruihuan is scheduled to meet local celebrities and CPPCC members, attend a reception to mark the 90thanniversary of the establishment of the Macao Chamber of Commerce and visit a number of scenic spots in Macao.
