The US military will participate in Taiwan's annual military drills later this year for the first time in 20 years, a local newspaper reported on Thursday. "Vice Defense Minister" Chen Chao-min indirectly confirmed the report during a question-and-answer session Thursday in the "Legislature Yuan".
Officers from the US Pacific Command will be in the Taiwanese military command center in Taipei during the drills, called "HanKuang-19" military exercises, the China Times quoted unidentified Taiwanese military sources as saying.
The US officers will participate in the drills in the name of preparing for a possible evacuation of American expatriates, the report said.
During the drills, the US officers will help the Taiwanese conduct a computer-simulated war by providing intelligence about Chinese troops, the report said. The military has yet to announce a date for the war games.
The HanKuang exercises are usually highly scripted drills that involve computer-simulated warfare and live-fire drills.
The US withdrew its military presence from Taiwan in 1979. But in recent years, military ties between the island province and the US have been expanding.
