Mubarak Hopes for Peaceful Settlement of Iraqi Crisis
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has expressed hope that the Iraqi crisis would be solved peacefully, a leading newspaper al-Ahram reported from Cairo Wednesday.

"Iraq would abide by UN Security Council resolution 1441 and would not give any chance for war to break out," Mubarak was quotedas saying.
"This could be done through Baghdad's full cooperation with UN inspectors," he said, warning against grave consequences in case ofwar on Iraq.
"The Iraqi leader should realize that the stance of Arab nationsregarding a peaceful settlement is based on the international legitimacy and Iraq's compliance with international resolutions," the Egyptian president stressed.
The United States has accused Iraq of developing weapons of massdestruction to pose a threat to security of its neighbors and worldpeace. Iraq had vehemently denied the allegation.
In early December, Iraq presented to the United Nations a massive dossier detailing its alleged programs about weapons of mass destruction.
However, the United States declared that Iraq was in "material breach" of UN Security Council resolution 1441, under which Iraq must fully account for its weapons of mass destruction or face "serious consequences."
More than 100 UN arms experts have been carrying out almost daily field inspections in Iraq since Nov. 27, while Washington hasstepped up preparations for a war on Iraq.
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has signed a 20-plus-page deployment order to send "significant" ground forces, combat aircraft and logistics support to the Gulf region.
Egypt has called for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue, fearing that any war on Iraq would further destabilize the volatileregional situation.
