Germany, Spain, Pakistan, Chile and Angola are to take their rotating two-year seats on the powerful United Nations Security Council just after midnight on Tuesday, New Year's Day.
The five new members were elected by the 191-nation UN General Assembly in September to fill seats being vacated at the end of 2002 by Colombia, Ireland, Mauritius, Norway and Singapore.
The Security Council, the UN body responsible for international peace and security, comprises five permanent members with veto power -- the United States, Russia, Britain, China and France -- and 10 nonpermanent members with two-year terms without veto power.
Five other nonpermanent members that will remain on the council for another year from Jan. 1 are Bulgaria, Cameroon, Guinea, Mexico and Syria.
France will assume in January the Security Council's presidency, which rotates monthly according to the English alphabetical order of the 15 member delegations.
