S. Korean Government Announces New Year Amnesty
South Korean government announced Monday it would be giving a New Year Amnesty including special pardons, reinstatement, and reduction of sentences to 122 criminals on Tuesday. The 14 businessmen including former Hanbo chairman Jeong Tae-su, former Kia chairman Kim Sun-hong, and former Korean Airlines chairman Cho Yang-ho.
South Korean government announced Monday it would be giving a New Year Amnesty including special pardons, reinstatement, and reduction of sentences to 122 criminals on Tuesday. The 14 businessmen including former Hanbo chairman Jeong Tae-su, former Kia chairman Kim Sun-hong, and former Korean Airlines chairman Cho Yang-ho, while Kim Jin-tae's death sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment.
S. Korean government will reduce the sentences for former Hanjin Shipping president Cho Soo-ho, eight Daewoo group former managers including former Daewoo Heavy Industries president Chu Ho-suk, and Hyosung Mechanic's president Cho Wook-rae.
Amnesties will also be given to some high-ranking government officials including former Cheong Wa Dae officials Bae Jae-wook and Chun Byung-min, former head of the Public Procurement Service Kang Jung-hoon, former Financial Supervisory Service official Kim Young-jae, and former head of Seoul Olympic Sport Promotion Foundation Choi Il-hong.
Seoul subway union Suk Chi-soon, the head of the illegal student group 'Hanchongryon' Kang Wi-won, and 46 other breakers of the National Security and Election laws will have their sentences reduced, 51 illegal foreign workers will be deported without finishing jail terms.
