Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo announced on Monday morning that she won't run in the presidential elections in 2004.
Arroyo said in the northern city of Baguio that she made the decision to cast away speculations that everything she does running the country is geared toward enhancing her chances to naildown an elective term in the upcoming national polls, the ABS-CBN news channel reported.
As the vice president, She took over the presidency after Joseph Estrada stepped down in the wake of the corruption scandalsand an military-backed popular uprising in January 2001.
Her administration has been rocked by controversies since the start, from political forces questioning the legitimacy of her assumption to the presidency to political appointments in her cabinet and problems associated with peace and order, criminality and a lurching economy, the report said.
Arroyo said she wanted to concentrate on improving the economy,reducing red tape and corruption and did not want to have every move that she and her administration make colored by talk of politicking.
