1. The 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held, at which the important thought of "Three Represents" wasincluded in the Party Constitution, the goal of building a well-off society in an all-round way was set, and a new central leadership was elected.

2. China's annual gross domestic product exceeded 10 trillion yuan (1.21 trillion US dollars) for the first time in history, andits economic growth rate reached 8 percent.

3. China's Shanghai won the hosting rights for World Expo 2010,the first time the event to be held in a developing country.

4. China's foreign trade topped 600 billion US dollars, moving to fifth position from sixth on the list of the world's major foreign trade powers. The influx of foreign direct investment intoChina reached a record 50 billion US dollars, ranking it first in the world as the biggest recipient of overseas investment.

5. Work started on the eastern line of a project to divert water from the Yangtze River to north China and another project totransport natural gas from west to east China. The damming of the man-made diversion canal of the Three Gorges Project was completed.

6. China stepped up efforts to codify its civil code, one of the country's three basic laws, and the draft civil code was submitted for the first time to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for deliberation.

7. The national work conference on re-employment unveiled a number of policies and requirements for expanding employment, and the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China regarded the employment issue as having a vital bearing on the people's livelihood, and the expansion of employment as a long-term strategy of the state.

8. The State Council abolished 789 items of administrative approval procedures, and all departments under it took a major step in the reform of the administrative approval system.

9. The Legend Group developed a super-computer with a computing speed of up to 1.027 trillion times per second. The company owns the intellectual property rights to the core technology.

10. The catastrophic April 15 and May 7 air crashes involving Chinese passenger planes occurred within a month, which triggered off a nationwide campaign on improving workplace safety. (Xinhua news)
