MIG-21 Crashes in Kashmir, Killing One on Ground

A Mig-21 fighter, belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF), crashed Thursday afternoon on a house near the local air base in Srinagar, capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

A Mig-21 fighter, belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF), crashed Thursday afternoon on a house near the local air base in Srinagar, capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

The aircraft crashed at 14:25 local time (8:55 GMT), when it was coming in to land at the Srinagar airport following an "operational sortie," the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

However, the agency said, the pilot, flying officer B. K. Singh, managed to bail out with his left arm broken.

It crashed on a house in a village about four kilometers from the airport and killed the owner of the house which was completely destroyed.

Quoting preliminary information available, IAF spokesman R.K. Dhingra ruled out the possibility of the aircraft being hit by a missile or ground fire.
