Annan Welcomes Nonaggression Declaration Between Afghanistan, Neighbors
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday welcomed the signing in Kabul at the weekend of a nonaggression declaration between Afghanistan and its six neighbors.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday welcomed the signing in Kabul at the weekend of a nonaggression declaration between Afghanistan and its six neighbors.
The UN chief said in a statement that he hoped the pact would strengthen the peace process in the country and promote political and economic progress in the entire region.
Annan called on the signatories of the Declaration on Good Neighborly Relations "to do their utmost to respect the principlesof territorial integrity and noninterference in each other's internal affairs, and to work together to solve the problems of terrorism, political extremism and drug trafficking."
"He expresses the hope that the Kabul Declaration will complement the Bonn Agreement to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for Afghanistan and its neighbors," the statement said.
Afghanistan and its six neighboring countries -- China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan -- have signed the declaration of nonaggression, during a meeting in Kabul on Sunday.
