Britain said on Monday that it was standing by its dossier on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, which said Iraq has a vast range of weapons and a potential nuclear arsenal.

The point was made after an Iraqi official claimed that the ongoing United Nations inspections were proof that the British report was nothing but "lies."

"Obviously, we stand by the dossier. We have nothing to add," Prime Minister Tony Blair's spokesman said.

General Amer al-Saadi, a top advisor to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, said on Sunday that US and British allegations of Iraq having mass destructive weapons were "lies" that "have been uncovered" by the UN inspectors as nothing had been found after 24days on inspection.

In a dossier published in September, Britain alleged that sincethe Gulf War of 1991, Iraq has continued to produce chemical and biological agents in defiance of UN resolutions.

The dossier also claimed that Iraq has tried to covertly acquire technology and materials that could be used in production of nuclear weapons.

But some British media reports said that there had been nothingreally new in the British dossier and it was mostly based on statistics in 1998, when UN inspectors were forced to pull back from Iraq.

Iraq has denied it is pursuing development of any weapons of mass destruction.
