'Turandot' Directed by Zhang Yimou to be Played in Seoul

Chinese famous director Zhang Yimou said Monday he will try his best to finish preparations for Puccini's opera "Turandot" before it is performed in Seoul next year.

Chinese famous director Zhang Yimou said Monday he will try his best to finish preparations for Puccini's opera "Turandot" before it is performed in Seoul next year.

Zhang said these in a press conference for the opera publicity in Sofitel Ambassador Hotel in downtown Seoul on Monday.

In his address, Zhang told the reporters that he hoped this time's performance would surpass the one four years ago in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China.

Moreover, the international famous director told Xinhua that he will "set up the backdrop according to the style of the Forbidden City, and exhibit the oriental culture to the audience splendidly."

"I visited the World Cup Stadium this morning, I found it's a little bit difficult to finish the preparation work in the so large place just in a four months. But we will try our best to complete the task with the cooperation of the South Korean part," said Zhang Yimou.

Zhang underscored as director of the opera that his main task is to ensure perfect performance of the singers and the orchestra."Elegant music, romantic story and grand backdrop are main factorsof a successful opera," added the director.

The world famous opera, co-sponsored by South Korean Hangan Opera and Hanjeon Artspool Center, will play in the Seoul World Cup Stadium on April 17-20, 2003. And the biggest budget of 3.5 million US dollars in South Korean opera history will be injected to the classical music splendid work.
