The southwestern Chinese municipality of Chongqing expects an investment of more than 23 billion yuan (2.8 billion US dollars) in building the city into a shipping hub on the upper reaches of the Yangtze river by 2010.
According to a recent government work meeting, the municipality will spend nearly 19 billion yuan (2.3 billion US dollars) on clearing the major navigation courses. Another 4.5 billion yuan (542 million US dollars) will be allocated for building ports and port facilities.
Chongqing is privileged in having 70 percent of the counties and cities under its administration located by rivers, mainly by the Yangtze, which flows the length of the municipality, and the Jialing and Wujiang Rivers, both major tributaries of the Yangtze.
The project is forecast for completion in eight years, and it is intended that a fleet of up to a combined displacement of 10,000 tons will be able to reach the port of Chongqing, reducing transport costs by 30 percent.
