Russian Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev will make a four-day visit to Iran beginning Sunday to discuss nuclear energy cooperation, the ministry's press service said Saturday.
Rumyantsev will meet with Iranian leaders, officials and lawmakers, and visit the construction site of the nuclear reactor that Russia is building in the Iranian port of Bushehr.
"This will be the first Rumyantsev's visit to Iran in the capacity of atomic energy minister," the press service noted.
During his stay in Iran, the two countries will sign an accord on the return to Russia of spent nuclear fuel from the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
Russia signed an agreement worth 800 million US dollars with Iran in 1995 on building a nuclear plant in Bushehr on the Gulf coast.
The United States opposes the project and has strongly urged Russia to abandon it, saying it could advance Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions.
Russia defends its cooperation with Iran by reiterating the project would serve civilian purposes and remain under international control.
