A US soldier died Saturday after being seriously wounded by an attack from al-Qaeda or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan's eastern province of Paktia, about 150 kilometers south of Kabul, local radio said Saturday.

The soldier, who belongs to troops of the coalition forces hunting for Taliban and al-Qaeda remnants in that area, died during a medical operation after being shot early Saturday, Liberty Radio said.

In addition, fires were shot at US troops Friday in Kunar province in northeast Afghanistan and one US soldier was injured, according to the radio.

Attacks against US troops and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops in Afghanistan have been increasing in recent days.

A grenade attack in the front of the gate of an ISAF camp in Kabul killed two people and injured three others on Thursday, two days after an afghan young man threw a grenade into a US military vehicle in downtown Kabul, injuring two US soldiers and one Afghan interpreter.

Afghan Interior Minister Taj Mohammad Khan Wardak on Wednesday said the authorities feared that al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants may stage a new round of terrorist attacks in the country in the coming days.
