Chinese-made Electric Locomotive Hits Record Speed
The Chinese-made electric locomotive "China Star" was clocked at 321.5 kilometers per hour during a test run early this week.
Made at the Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Plant, a major manufacturer of train engines in the country, the China Star locomotive features cutting-edge technology, said Liu Youmei, chief designer of the locomotive program.
With the plant fully having the intellectual property right, China Star's technological specifications rival that of internationally-advanced standards in developed countries, according to Liu, also an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
High-speed trains drawn by an electric engine are regarded as a symbol of modernization in the railway industry. The successful development of a train with an average speed of over 200 kilometers per hour indicates that China's locomotive enterprises are now able to compete internationally, Liu said.
