East China Enacts Law to Improve Food Safety

The legislative body of east China's Zhejiang Province Friday approved a vegetable pesticide residue quota supervision and management regulation as part of efforts to ensure food safety for local residents.

The regulation requires that all levels of government in Hangzhou, Zhejiang's capital, should allocate special funds for vegetable pesticide residue quota supervision and management.

The local regulation also urges the city's agricultural administrative department, quality and technology supervision department and its industrial and commercial administrative department to step up supervision over the vegetable pesticide residue quota during the process of vegetable production, processing and sale.

The regulation also stipulates that all wholesale vegetable markets and supermarkets should set up special examination equipment and assign staff to monitor the vegetable pesticide residue.

Those wholesalers violating the regulation twice within one year will be prohibited from selling vegetables.
