The rain went on and on Friday in Macao, but various celebrations of the third anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland continued.
The national flag was hoisted at 8:00 a.m. at the Golden Lotus Square. A solemn ceremony was attended by hundreds of people including Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the Special Administrative Region (SAR), central government officials and the People's Liberation Army commanders stationed in Macao.
The square accommodates a golden lotus sculpture presented by the central government as a gift for the establishment of the SAR in December 1999, when Macao entered a new historic era in implementing the principles of "One Country, Two Systems," "Macao People Governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy.
A grand reception was held by the SAR government at the Macao Tower at 4:00 p.m. In an address to the audience, Edmund Ho noted that after experiencing different challenges and tests over the past three years, the Macao SAR is moving forward towards a clear goal, vowing to stick to a "pragmatic" attitude to strive for Macao's future.
The reception witnessed the participation of people from every walk of life.
A national flag, national anthem and national emblem exhibition opened in Macao one week ago to arouse local residents' sense of masters of the nation.
After that, local people watched one art performance after another, including a song and dance performance featuring the folklore and art style of Inner Mongolia, a traditional Wudang martial arts performance and a 100-meter-long picture scroll worked out by more than 200 inland artists, which all expressed good wishes for the three-year-old Macao SAR.
Celebrations of the Macao Chamber of Commerce were held on Wednesday, at which Ma Man Kei, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), urged the Macao people to further support the administration of the SAR government headed by Edmund Ho, so as tojointly strive for an overall revitalization of Macao.
And Friday night, the Cultural Institute will offer local residents a concert at the Macao Cultural Center and the Macao Government Tourist Office will sponsor a magnificent fireworks display above the sea.
