US President George W. Bush on Thursday congratulated Roh Moo-Hyun on his election as new president of South Korea, the White House said.
"The president looks forward to working closely with president-elect Roh as the United States and the Republic of Korea address the many challenges and opportunities that we face together," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters.
South Korean ruling party candidate Roh, 56, was elected the country's new president to succeed incumbent President Kim Dae-Jung in the voting held Thursday. Opposition candidate Lee Hoi-Chang has already conceded defeat in the balloting.
