Britain has placed an order to move armour and other military equipment to the Gulf, Sky News quoted shipping sources as saying on Wednesday.
It comes a day after the Ministry of Defense (Mod) confirmed that more than 20,000 British troops would begin moving to the Middle East within weeks.
The sources said that the British government has placed a contract for one large merchant vessel to carry heavy armor and military supplies, including tanks and armored cars.
There are also reports that defense chiefs have placed a further order for two more ships to carry equipment to the region, SKY News reported.
Commercial shipping is often used to transport heavy military vehicles and equipment.
The the placement of orders follows similar moves by the United States. An MoD spokesman declined to give specifics but confirmed the government was seeking ships, SKY News said.
Procurement orders of specialist desert equipment are being accelerated. The first shipping order is for a large roll-on roll-off ship for a 90-day period from 15 January.
The vessel is due to load in Britain or northern Europe and will unload its cargo in the eastern Mediterranean or northern Gulf.
The sources said the other orders were for a vessel to carry 900 containers and a semi-submersible to be used to move landing craft.
