The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) announced on Tuesday it accepts in principle the US "roadmap"plan for peace in the Middle East.
The announcement was made in a letter Palestinian leaders Yasser Arafat addressed to the representatives of the Quartet committee, which includes the
United States
,
Russia
, the United Nations and the European Union.
The Quartet is expected to declare the details of the plan in the future.
The letter was handed over to the committee by Arafat's aide Tayeb Abdel Rahim and Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat. Copies of the letter were also handed to both ambassadors of
Egypt
and
Jordan
.
"The Palestinian leadership is very much interested in and concerned about the coming meeting of the Quartet committee and the decisions that would be taken," said Abdel Rahim.
He added Arafat expressed in the letter his acceptance of the roadmap plan and called for bringing the Mideast peace process to its right track.
Erekat said Arafat urged the committee to work towards ending
Israel
i attacks, incursions and raids that are continuing and escalating against the Palestinian people in the West Bank and GazaStrip.
"Declaring the roadmap plan would help end the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories and might help revive the stalled Mideast peace process," said Erekat.
