Over 4,700 Russian Troops Killed in Chechnya: Official

A total of 4,705 Russian troops have been killed in Chechnya since the beginning of the second war in the region, Russian military sources said Tuesday.

A total of 4,705 Russian troops have been killed in Chechnya since the beginning of the second war in the region, Russian military sources said Tuesday.

Russia launched the second war in Chechnya in October 1999.

"In this time (from Oct. 1, 1999 to Dec. 15, 2002), 13,040 armyservicemen and policemen were wounded, and 28 people are missing,"officials at military headquarters in the Northern Caucasus said, as quoted by the Interfax news agency.

According to the headquarters' information, some 14,113 guerillas have been killed over the three years of the campaign.
