China Open Badminton Championships Kicks off

The 170,000 US-dollar China Open badminton championships opened Tuesday in Guangzhou.

The 170,000 US-dollar China Open badminton championships opened Tuesday in Guangzhou.

The China Open, which is the last grand prix event of the 2002 season, attracts a total of 163 players from 13 countries and regions, according to organizers.

Peter Christensen Gade of Denmark, the former world's No. 1, isthe most notable foreign player in the men's singles competition which is expected to be dominated by China as many top shuttlers of Indonesia and South Korea did not come.

Indonesia decided to skip the event because the schedule clashes with national league while South Korea only sent a second-string squad to Guangzhou.

The women's competitions are also expected to see a Chinese dominance. World champions Gong Ruina and Gao Ling/Huang Sui willspearhead the host team in the singles and doubles events respectively.

Denmark's Carmila Martin, the Sydney Olympic runner-up and the 1999 world champion, will not compete at the five-star tournament registered by the International Badminton Federation.

Preliminaries of five events have already kicked off and will continue on Wednesday. The main draw competition runs from December 19 to 22.
