The South-to-North Water Transfer Project will soon be kicked off at its east route. The project, aiming at relieving the water shortage in North China, has three diversion routes, namely the East Route, Middle and West, while construction of the East Route will be carried out first. Officials in charge of the East Route construction with the Water Conservancy Dept. of Jiangsu Province said that a total of 63.4bn yuan will be invested, with water diversion and pollution control consuming 42bn and 23.84bn yuan respectively. The main line of water diversion sees a stretch of 1,156km, of which 90 percent of the water channels are the present-day rivers and lakes. Along the whole East Route, Dongping Lake tells a highest altitude, some 40m over the Yangtze River water level. Thus, 13 tiers with 51 pumping stations will be built along the route south of the Yellow River.
Officials also added that with the upcoming progress of the East Route construction, water shortage in areas along the east route would by-and-by be eased. Jiangsu, the starting point of the East Route project, will input 19.7bn yuan into the principal part of the project in the precinct of the province.
As a matter of fact, the East Route construction is meant for expanding the scale and extending the water diversion course on the basis of the project for transferring the Yangtze River water to the north conducted by Jiangsu province. It has built 16 pivotal pumping stations with a total water pumping capability of 1,671 cubic meters per second.
As learned, during the first phase of the project, a pumping station at speed of 100 cubic meters per second will be built in Baoying, coupled with 45.45km of river course dredged along the Sanyang and Tong rivers. To date, the Baoying Construction Office is nominated as the project legal person who will assume the responsibility in supervision of the project.
